Early Literacy is the Gateway to Lifetime Success
A comprehensive early literacy policy includes strategies to support teachers and administrators, students and their families. We can all ensure that students have the foundational reading skills needed to learn, graduate and succeed.
Our Inconsistent Instructional Models Produce Troubling Results
There are common challenges we can overcome to improve reading outcomes.
Our Comprehensive Early Literacy Policy is the Solution
Our comprehensive policy includes 18 Early Literacy Fundamental Principles for early identification, family engagement, teacher training and support, intensive reading intervention and retention as a last resort for students struggling to read on grade level.
How we address learning differences:
To effectively support students with learning differences, teachers must be equipped with knowledge and best practices to provide instruction that is responsive to students’ needs, including students with dyslexia.
How roles play a part in a child's reading performance:
All stakeholders play a significant role in fostering reading success. Parents and families, educators, community members, and policymakers must work together to develop a strong support system for all students.
Why these best practices / interventions are needed:
Effective Tier 1 instruction is key to preventing reading failure, and early identification of reading deficiencies with targeted interventions can help students overcome potential reading challenges later in life.
